Customer success story: Interview with Clercy Kembo from Free Your Mind

In April, we are celebrating the “Month of Creators”, therefore at Wordans we would like to pay special attention to all fashion entrepreneurs running custom apparel businesses. For this reason, we decided to dedicate this month to our most talented creators and embrace their success story in our blog.

At Wordans we believe that the success of our customers is also our own victory. We are proud to be a part of a business journey of those young creatives and to see our customers’ custom apparel businesses growing all around the world! In today’s article, we had a pleasure to interview one of our customers Clercy Kembo, the owner of Free Your Mind clothing – The socially conscious brand that encourages you to think for yourself & outside the box.

Tell us about your business.

I’m selling customized fashion apparel and accessories. But I also work as a music producer with a startup. My product offering goes from hoodies to shirts, caps, etc..

How was it in your case, what made you decide to start your own business?

At first, it was just a joke when I came up with this whole idea of having a brand. But later that night, I thought about it and went deeper into that thought. I began with research on the internet and finding information on how to start. I called a couple of friends of mine to work on this idea together. They were excited, so we got started. Along the way, 1 by 1 they started to fall short; they didn’t feel the drive to put in the hard work. So I was on my own for a very long time. I didn’t know how to keep going from there. Until one day I met this guy who told me he had a machine to print on clothing so I asked him where he sourced his clothing. He told me he relied on Wordans. So I immediately made a note of that and went to look it up. I found exactly what I was looking for. I started to explore this website and the options that this website has. Once I found everything I needed, I started to build my own website. Once I had that website, I searched for a machine to print.

What was the biggest challenge at first and how did you overcome it?

The biggest challenge was, the fact that there are many people having a clothing brand like me, I was trying to find my way of standing out from the crowd, as I am a small player in this wider business. Also the paperwork, how am I going to sell it? I needed a lot of information on how to do it. It almost made me give up. I was also thinking about what people would think about me.

Where do you find your daily inspiration?

I find my inspiration through true stories of entrepreneurs who started like I did. As I always say, if they can do it I can do that too. It’s really good to look up at stores who did this before you. Because I am someone who is always looking to learn and improve.

Which techniques are you using to customize your products?

The technique I use is screen pressure. I have used that technique for a very long time because it is very easy to customize my products. I have a machine to press the heat on the flex folie to let it melt on my products. Before I put on the heat I cut my logo with a silhouette machine from Cameo.

How did you find out about Wordans?

I found out about Wordans first from a friend, who used to buy products from Wordans and introduced me to it. At first I was looking for apparel, but  I couldn’t find any. So one day at a party that particular friend talked to me about the website and the very next day I went to the website and started doing my research on exactly what I needed. That’s how I discovered Wordans.

Why have you chosen Wordans as your supplier?

I have decided to stay with Wordans as my long-term supplier because I am very satisfied with the products they have and their delivery. They are always on point and if there is something missing or lost they are very quick in handling the matter.

What advice would you give to other people who would like to launch their own e-commerce business?

  • Always stay true to yourself, believe in yourself and invest in yourself. Nobody will do it for you.
  • Take your business really seriously
  • In the first place don’t think about getting money, because building a business is something that you do in the beginning. You will first invest thousands before you get any return. It will not make you rich at the beginning.
  •  Enjoy your craft, enjoy the process

What are your plans for the future?

I am thinking of going back to school to learn more about business. i want to be a full entrepreneur and open a real store with my brand.
